Pathway Analysis Applications for Systems Biology
Meaningful modelling of biomolecular pathways and networks requires access to accurate datasets of biomolecular interactions and their biological context. To achieve the required accuracy, pathway databases such as Metacore and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) rely on hundreds of curators who manually review the journal and patent literature, and employ specialised software to populate the interactions databases. The Metacore database, for example, provides semantically consistent descriptions of protein-protein, protein-DNA and protein-RNA signalling, protein-ligand interactions, protein complexes and the reactions of endogenous and xenobiotic metabolism in over 1.3 million manually curated interactions (as of April 2014).
